The water, the rocks, the way the last hour of light falls across Lake Grapevine and turns everything golden and blue and a little bit coastal. It does not feel like North Texas. It feels like somewhere you saved up to go. We brought a family and two little ones down there for a Family Hour session on analog film and the place did exactly what we knew it would.
The kids were in the water before we even had the camera up. That is always the sign of a good session. When the children forget there is a photographer and just exist inside the moment you stop directing and start documenting. We followed them across the rocks and into the shallows and let the light do the rest. Analog film and golden hour water light were made for each other. The grain holds it in a way that feels tactile, like you could reach into the photograph and feel the cold of the lake on your feet.
The parents watched and laughed and pulled them back from going too deep and held each other in the spaces between. That is the real session. Not the posed ones. The ones where everyone forgets to perform and just shows up as themselves at the end of a good day outside with their people.
