The McWain family’s film Family Day session in Denver Colorado started at home and ended in the park with grandparents and everything in between was exactly what analog film was built to hold. A full day with a family in their own city, their own space, and the people they love most showing up to be part of it.
We started at the house. The morning light, the familiar rooms, the kids in the place they know better than anywhere else on earth. Home sessions always start loose and easy and that ease is exactly what you want on film. By the time we moved to the park everyone was warm and comfortable and the grandparents folded right in like they had been there all along.
That is the thing about including grandparents in a family session that most people do not think about until it is too late. These are the photographs that will matter most to the most people for the longest time. The grandchildren will have them when the grandparents are gone. That is not a small thing and it is exactly the kind of weight that analog film was made to carry.
Denver backed the whole day beautifully. The light in Colorado has a clarity to it that pairs perfectly with film grain. Clean and bright and a little bit elevated, like everything is just slightly more itself than it would be somewhere else.
