Austin Slow Sunday Family Session

On The Journal

When a family comes back to shoot on analog film a second time it means the first set of photographs did exactly what they were supposed to do. She is a quilt maker, a creative, a person who makes things with her hands and fills her home with the evidence of that, and she wanted her Family Hour session to reflect all of it.

So we used the quilts. Draped and held and wrapped around two kids who had no interest in being still and every interest in being exactly themselves inside the home their mother has built around them. The quilts brought color and texture and a layer of meaning that a park or a studio never could have given us. These are not props. They are Maura’s work. Putting them in the frame made the session a portrait of her whole life, not just her family.

A creative home photographs differently than any other kind. There is intention in every corner, texture on every surface, and a warmth that analog film holds onto like it was made for exactly this. The grain, the light, the handmade things filling the room — it all adds up to something that feels less like a family session and more like a document of a life being lived on purpose.
