Garden and Backyard Family Session

The Heger family did not need to go anywhere. Everything worth photographing was already right there. A backyard garden with kale growing in the Texas summer heat, a creek just close enough to walk to, and a little boy who wanted to be in both places at once. We spent a full Family Day session with them and did not waste a single frame.

There is something about a family in their own space that a studio or a park cannot replicate. The backyard is where the real life happens. The morning routines, the things the kids ask for before breakfast, the garden that somebody tends to because it matters to them. Picking kale with a toddler in a Texas summer is not a photograph most people think to make and it is exactly the kind of photograph that will stop you cold in twenty years.

The creek was its own world. Cool and shaded and completely separate from the heat of the afternoon above it. The little boy found his footing on the rocks and the parents watched and reached out when they needed to and let him figure the rest out himself. That dynamic, the way a family moves together when nobody is watching, is what analog film captures better than anything else. The grain softens the edges and what is left is just the feeling of the day.

Texas summers are relentless and beautiful and they go fast. If you are a Dallas or DFW family who wants a Family Day session on analog film that documents your real life in your real space, Front Gate Photo and Film would love to spend a few hours with you. We shoot film family sessions across Dallas, Fort Worth, and all of DFW. Book your Family Day session today before the season changes.
